NATURE’S MIRACLE INGREDIENT!
18-05-2009
At present GP’s and retail pharmacists have been overwhelmed with panic requests for prescription flu remedies such as Tamiflu and Relenza, with stock shortages reported at many pharmacies. These are not known to be effective against Swine Flu, with researchers estimating several months until a true vaccine is produced.
There is however other OTC natural medicines that people can choose (do not require prescriptions) that can boost the body’s immunity against viruses.
“Supplements containing a naturally derived bioactive, multifunctional protein - Lactoferrin and Immunoglobulins may help ward off the flu” according to Gerald Quigley, practicing retail Priceline pharmacist / health specialist. “Both of these occur naturally in one’s body, so boosting them enables the body to better protect itself.”
Clinical Research has demonstrated that Lactoferrin has powerful antimicrobial and Immunomodulatory properties that can assist in protecting the body from a wide variety of bacteria and viruses.
“Lactoferrin is a naturally derived protein which offers consumers a wide variety of benefits, such as strong antibacterial and antiviral properties and for that reason it is a hero ingredient in preventative health products. Not only does Lactoferrin reduce the risk of harmful bacteria, it also boosts the immune system and helps the body to fight infections,” says Associate Professor Dr Luis Vitetta, PHD, BSc, Principal Research Fellow, School of Medicine, University of QLD.
In lieu of an appropriate vaccine Dr Vitetta suggests that cautious Australians increase their intake of supplements containing Lactoferrin and Immunoglobulins to naturally boost their immune system which may provide protection against the flu, particularly now that we are entering the winter months.
Federal Health Minister Nicola Roxon has called for vigilant measures to be put in place at Australian airports to help combat the risk of outbreak by requesting that quarantine detain anyone suspected of having the potentially deadly virus before they enter the country.
Dr Vitetta advises any person who thinks they may be suffering from flu symptoms to contact their GP or Pharmacist.
